Part 2: Remote Work x Setting Expectations

Updated: Mar 21, 2022

Be clear about what collaboration looks like in a digitally remote world.

Socialize the Work.

We all strive to go above and beyond expectations. I genuinely believe that every person loves the feeling of accomplishment that comes from going beyond the expectations. Therefore, in this digitally remote world, where productivity is supercharged, it is critical to set expectations for remote teams around collaboration, transparency, and accountability. It's important to set these boundaries not out of fear that productivity or effectiveness will wane, but rather, to protect our team members from burn-out. And ultimately to create a sustainable framework that fosters and amplifies nourishing connection between team members.

Be clear about what collaboration looks like in a digitally remote world. At Anchored, we strive to ensure our team members and clients know what to expect in terms of engagement workflow. This means we set the right schedules. Everyone knows when they're expected to be available. They have some clarity on adding definition to the blurred lines between work & home life. We are intentional and thoughtful in setting meetings and sending messages especially when it comes to the cadence. Workflow for us is tailored to identify, discuss, and then find solutions.

For our teams, socializing the work means proactively embracing transparency and accountability. When everyone has more visibility into what is being worked on it is much easier to support each other. Further, the speed to which issues are identified increases. Of course, this all has to be "Anchored" in trust. (See Part 1: Company Culture Matters). The goal is for everyone to understand what's being asked of them, while feeling comfortable with asking questions, flagging issues, and giving feedback. Further, innovative technology and remote work dynamics allows us to redefine work, allowing us to offer each other expertise, perspective, support and stability in refreshing new ways.

Pre or Post-Covid19, we're all searching for genuine connection. And I believe that truly socializing work creates a real connection between team members and our clients. Work is no longer just work for many of us. It is often one of our primary sources of connection in life. Therefore, it makes sense for us to try our best to create a framework where these connections can flourish. I, for one, can attest that there's no better feeling than the joy that comes from finding and implementing a solution for a problem...and even better when it is amplified across a team.
